Summer Student Position – Legal Officer/Youth Justice Camp Coordinator

The Public Legal Information Association of NL (PLIAN) is welcoming applications for a dynamic, motivated, and independent student to work with us this summer in the position of Legal Officer and Youth Justice Camp Coordinator.

The student in this position will be primarily responsible for organizing and facilitating several Youth Justice Camps in the province this summer, with locations to be determined but anticipated to include St. John’s, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, and potentially another location.

The student will also be responsible for fundraising for the Youth Justice Camps, organizing guest speakers, recruiting volunteers to assist in the camp, preparing the mock trial exercise as part of the camp, promoting and advertising the camps, and registering participating young people, as well as any other duties required to carry out the camps. We anticipate holding the Youth Justice Camps in July and August this year.

The student in this position will also have other duties to be assigned by PLIAN’s Executive Director, including assisting in answering client inquiries through PLIAN’s Legal Information Line and Lawyer Referral Service; working with PLIAN staff to organize and facilitate pro bono legal clinics in the province; researching, developing, and editing legal information publications; assisting in the development and delivery of legal information presentations; supporting proposal development for future projects; helping manage PLIAN’s social media accounts; assisting with office and administrative tasks where needed; and supporting the work associated with other PLIAN projects, including the Journey Project and the .

Preference will be given to a student currently pursuing a law degree or other education related to the law.

The anticipated starting date for the position is June 14, 2021. The duration of the position will be 10 weeks, based on 35 hours of work per week. The student will be compensated at a rate of $15/hour.
