At this time most courts have restricted access to include only those involved in court matters. Lawyers and self-represented litigants access to courts may be limited at this time. This does not mean you cannot make progress with your legal matter.
Regardless of court proceedings you may still begin completing court documents, enter into legal agreements with other people, and perform other legal matters. For example, this may mean agreeing to settle a legal dispute, agreeing to a custody/parenting time arrangement, or any other number of alternative dispute resolution agreements. Courts are not needed to determine every legal dispute.
It is highly recommended to consult with a lawyer if possible to address your legal concerns.
Legal Aid
Currently, Legal Aid NL has suspended some operations regarding legal representation and has placed certain restricts to allow for representation of urgent matters, such as bail. This may include telephone consultations or representation of clients. Please contact Legal Aid NL to determine whether their services are available for you.
Lawyer Referral Service
The Public Legal Information Association of NL is maintaining services remotely. We will continue to provide referrals through our Lawyer Referral Service so that you may obtain legal advice. The Lawyer Referral Service is available to help connect people with lawyers to receive general legal advice. This program operates as a one time 30-minute consultation for $40.00 (tax included) with a lawyer in a particular area of law. There is no obligation for either you or the lawyer to continue beyond this 30-minute consultation. Lawyers are not expected to appear in court or complete legal documents for you through this service. To access our Lawyer Referral Service you may contact our office by contacting us at one of the following options at the bottom of this page.
Please Note:
While we are still able to provide lawyer referrals, we cannot guarantee any service of any lawyer at this time. Every lawyer in the province maintains a different level of practice that is comfortable for them and the safety of their firm. As such, we cannot guarantee that a particular lawyer will be immediately available. If you require an additional referral during the COVID-19 Pandemic, we will certainly do our best to assist you and provide an additional referral if possible.
