About the Public Legal Information Association of NL

The Public Legal Information Association of Newfoundland and Labrador is the province’s only non-profit organization exclusively dedicated to public legal education and information. Since 1984, Public Legal Information has educated and informed Newfoundlanders and Labradorians about the law, with the intent of increasing access to justice. We provide a number of services to the public, including operating a Lawyer Referral Service and Legal Information Line, developing plain language legal materials, delivering legal information presentations, facilitating free legal clinics, and operating a number of projects focusing on specific populations and areas of the law.

We are Newfoundland and Labrador’s representative with the Public Legal Education Association of Canada (PLEAC). Public Legal Information is funded by the Government of Canada, the Law Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, with in-kind and project funding provided by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and other funders.

LEGAL INFORMATION LINE AND LAWYER REFERRAL SERVICE

Public Legal Information operates a Legal Information Line and Lawyer Referral Service. Clients can access general legal information and referrals to lawyers registered with the Lawyer Referral Service. Lawyers who register with this service agree to provide an initial 30-minute consultation at a cost of $40 (taxes included). Clients can access summary legal advice during the 30-minute consultation but the lawyer will not complete legal work during this time (such as representation in court or the completion or review of legal documents). There is no obligation for the lawyer to complete any work beyond the initial 30 minutes or for the client to hire the lawyer.
