The Public Legal Information Association of NL (PLIAN) is hiring a student for the position of Legal Information Officer for the summer of 2019 and encourages interested students to apply by sending a CV and covering letter to email@example.com.
In the position of Legal Information Officer, the successful candidate will be primarily responsible for working with the PLIAN team to answer client inquiries to the Legal Information Line and Lawyer Referral Service. This work will involve gathering information from clients, conducting research on legal processes and legal and non-legal referral options, and communicating general legal information and referrals back to clients.
The Legal Information Officer will also be responsible for supporting PLIAN’s other core services and project work. This may include, but is not limited to: research, writing, and editing of plain language legal publications and presentations; delivery of plain language legal presentations in the community; representing PLIAN at committee meetings, workshops, presentations, and other community events; potentially facilitating and running a Youth Justice Camp to be held in August; supporting the work of the Journey Project (a joint initiative of PLIAN and the NL Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre to provide legal support to survivors of sexual violence); supporting the work of PLIAN’s project to provide legal information and support to newcomers to Newfoundland and Labrador; updating PLIAN’s website and social media accounts with relevant news, events, and information; and other duties as assigned by PLIAN’s Executive Director or Office Manager.
The successful candidate will be a dynamic individual able to work independently in a variety of environments and adapt to changing circumstances and assignments. They will exhibit high levels of responsibility, professionalism, and teamwork.
Other required traits include experience working with the public and experience working in a team environment.
Preferred but not required experience includes: legal education or other legal experience; experience working with youth; experience providing information to the general public.
The duration of the contract is 12 weeks, with a start date to be negotiated with the successful candidate. Work hours are full time, 35 hours per week.

A subsequent written test may follow as part of the selection process. The successful candidate will also be required to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.
